Artist Spotlight: CJ Oliver

On Creativity, Genre Hopping, and Building Something from Nothing

by Lauren Joyner

For producer and artist CJ Oliver, every track begins with one thing: possibility. Whether she’s experimenting with unfamiliar synth textures or blending unexpected genres, Oliver thrives in the creative unknown. “I always start with a clean slate,” she says. “Messing around with sounds, textures, or synths I haven’t explored yet—building something from nothing is truly magical.”

A genre-spanning approach

Over the course of her career, CJ has explored a wide range of musical styles. While she’s trusted to work across multiple genres, certain sonic spaces feel like home. “I truly love living in the dark R&B/chill space, as well as more experimental electronic music,” she shares. “But I incorporate so much from both of those genres into the mainstream-focused projects I produce—it ends up being a great marriage.”

Her genre fluidity not only keeps her work fresh but also fuels her adaptability in the ever-changing sync world.A serendipitous path to sync
CJ’s journey into sync licensing wasn’t part of a master plan—it was a happy accident.

In 2020, while working with a manager connected to a successful sync artist, she was introduced to the world of music for film, TV, and ads. “Soundstripe has been a huge part of that journey for me as well,” she says.

One standout moment was hearing her song “One Call” featured in the horror film Founders Day. That placement came from her Europop-inspired project Nom Fabrique, a creative venture she describes as “one of my favorites to date.”

Songs close to the heart

Ask CJ to pick a favorite track, and she hesitates—not for lack of love, but because so many songs hold meaning. “‘Mess Up’ has been one I love lately because it was a fun track to put together,” she says. “‘2, 3 Step’ with REMEDEE was a blast because it’s so vibey and left of center.” But it’s her upcoming unreleased work that excites her most.

Looking ahead

When it comes to her musical future, CJ prefers to embrace the unknown. “My love for music takes me places I never thought I’d end up,” she reflects. “If you love what you do, and you make yourself available to whatever comes your way, amazing things end up happening that you would never expect. That’s where I live mentally, for now.”

From dark R&B to experimental electronic, from sync success to unexplored sonic territory, CJ Oliver is an artist in constant motion—always ready to start with a blank canvas and see where the sound takes her.
